Everyone applying for Food Stamps has the right to:
- Get an application right away when you ask for it
- Have your application accepted immediately –even if you only supply your name address and signature
- Have an adult who knows your situation represent you, if you cannot get to the Food Stamp office yourself
- Get Food Stamps within 30 days after you apply, if you qualify
- Get Food Stamp benefits within 5 calendar days, if you are in immediate need and qualify for expedited services
- Receive fair and equal treatment regardless of your age, sex, race, color, handicap, religion, national origin, or political beliefs
- right to receive a written notice on your application and right to have a fair hearing if you disagree with the food stamp office's decision concerning your eligibility for Food Stamps.
- You may fax your application to your local Food Stamp Office
- You may apply even if you are homeless
- Know that applying for or receiving food stamps will not affect your immigration status. Food Stamps do not count among the programs that are considered to make you a 'public charge.' (The government uses the term ‘public charge’ to describe people who are primarily dependent on public benefits.)
